Our Story

The Mt. Olive Brethren Church was established in 1884 by 20 families which came from the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren.  We are located in a small community locally known as Pineville, which is part of the McGaheysville area of Rockingham County.

For two years, the church met in an old schoolhouse on the property the church now sits on.  In 1884 12 people signed a note promising funds of $52 for the building of a house of worship to be known as “The Progressive Brethren Church”.  The original church building still stands as the anchor of our building, heritage and our history.  Additions to the church were added in 1982, 1997 and 2001.

Today we honor those who stepped out in faith in our local congregation by continuing to hear the voice of God and following the leading of the Holy Spirit.  Our church is active in outreach in our local community, nationally and abroad.  Within our walls we continue to seek a spirit of unity and fellowship among our members.  As we celebrate 140 years of the past, present and future, it is an exciting time to be at Mt. Olive.

We have active ministry groups for all ages which you can check out from our ministries page.  We also reach out to our local community through a Backpack Buddy Program for children at a local elementary school and middle school, and the homeless through Open Doors and Friendship House.  We support mission trips nationally and internationally as well.  We believe in the great commandment to “Go and make disciples”.

We also feature Building Blocks Children’s Center in the white portion of our building.  Each day 70 children attend our daycare and we are staffed by a wonderful group of individuals who love children.  You may obtain more information by clicking here Building Blocks Children’s Center
